My students are seven year olds who are progressing through the journey of bilingualism. We are in a highly diverse community in Southern California. My classroom has 50% native English speakers and 50% native Spanish speakers. It has been such an amazing journey watching them grow linguistically, academically, and socially. Their understanding of the difficulties one goes through learning a second language has already helped create better citizens. Many come from homes that speak native dialects or other languages and are great assets because of their ability to provide cultural and linguistic diversity.
