My students are kindergarten, first and second graders who are Deaf or hard of hearing. Our classroom is located in Detroit, MI. I pride myself on providing my students with a creative and stimulating classroom environment but as you can imagine this can be a challenge at times. As many people know our school district is going through some very public financial problems and funding for classroom supplies and materials has been extremely limited. My students have varying degrees of hearing loss and use hearing aids, FM auditory trainers and cochlear implants to help them acquire and improve their speech and language skills. We are learning to use our voices to speak and our eyes and ears to hear (we don't use sign language). Learning speech and language can be very, very difficult for my students. They need direct instruction and lots and lots and lots of repetition to learn skills that come naturally to most hearing children.
