Individuals with sensory integration needs can include students with Autism, Sensory Integration Processing Disorder and Significant Impaired Emotional Disorder. Our elementary school has a high number of students with these disabilities, including two specialized programs for students with high needs autism. The special education team wants to create a “Sensory Break Room” that all of our students can access throughout the day. This will be an area in the school that our students can come to when the sounds are too loud, the lights are too bright and they feel as though they want to jump out of their skin. A place to come and take a break and get the sensory input that they desperately need so they can continue with their day in a positive manner.
