My students are in 4th & 5th grade in two elementary schools and a 6th-8th grade middle school. Our population is very diverse, primarily low income, and many come to me with little home support. Despite difficult conditions, they bounce through my door: into a safe space, and learn to play their instrument!
Many students with neurodivergence, behavioral issues, or delayed development seek out music as a way to relax, feel important or included, or to hyperfocus on something they find interesting.
While many days are difficult, connecting through music isn't. Music has the power to help and change people and we try to do that every day.
