My name is Leticia Garcia, and I'm a fourth grade teacher at Ascot Ave. El. Apart from being an Ascot alumnus myself, I've taught at this location for seventeen years and have become enamored with teaching fourth grade after working with students from K-5. While studying at Ascot in the eighties, I had outstanding teachers who provided me with many exciting opportunities, which sparked my interest in several areas, especially mathematics and science. Since my return, I see firsthand many of the same problems that existed in the community decades ago, primarily poverty, crime, and the difficulties of having to learn a new language. I've been fortunate to have helped the majority of my students improve in most, if not all, academic areas every year, focusing on motivating them to become independent learners. Unfortunately, LAUSD is unable to provide some things I feel would greatly enhance their learning.
