I work in a kindergarten class with up to 30 students at the same time. I have a part time bilingual aide but very few parent volunteers. The young students have naturally short attention spans and require constant attention and support to promote learning behaviors. Their favorite time of the day, aside from recess, is Academic Center Time. During centers I provide the students with a variety of tasks to promote literacy, number sense, fine, motor, and social skills. They enjoy working together with their friends and classmates in carefully crafted groups of 5-6 students. They are encouraged to communicate throughout the process of completing the assigned task, learning to cooperate, problem solve and develop leadership skills along the way.
