My students at the Mather School in Dorchester are curious, creative, and deeply engaged learners from K1 through 6th grade. In General and Choral Music, they experience music as something to play, move, read, and create. Using Orff-based teaching rooted in literature, movement, and joyful exploration, students actively make music through singing, body percussion, composition, and improvisation. They develop skills on recorders, boomwhackers, rhythm sticks, hand drums, and a wide variety of shakers, learning to listen, collaborate, and express themselves. Music class is a space where students take creative risks, celebrate one another, and grow as musicians and people. Throughout their work, they consistently demonstrate the Mather Core Values by being Kind, Safe, Respectful, and Responsible members of our musical community.
