I teach in an urban school where 95% of students belong to an ethnic minority and almost all qualify for free and reduced lunch. This year, our entire school is on free lunch since there were so many students who qualified.
My students are the epitome of why I love to teach. They are restless, anxious, and completely contagious. Often their angst is misdiagnosed as hyperactive, but I know they are simply teenagers looking for answers that often their parents or too many adults don't have the patience to answer.
Most of my students are growing up in a bicultural home that offers limited explanations of the world that represents them. Their parents spent their childhood miles away in countries too far or too sad to remember.
Our school serves nearly 1500 of such students and does so on limited funds that don't allow for books, but always finds money for test taking material.
