My students are described as "high risk" by our district, due to the majority of them coming from low-income households. However, what I see are individuals with big dreams and tremendous drive, and they want to show the world they are so much more than income surveys and test scores. When they can depend on basic supplies being available in their classrooms, it removes a tremendous amount of stress. They know they'll have what they need to do their work well and won't be embarrassed by having to borrow from other classmates. It may sound small, but this makes a significant difference in their mindset when they come to school. Students are excited by classrooms that are inviting, and feel safe when they know their basic needs will be met--whether it's tools for academic work, snacks when they come to school hungry, or personal hygiene products. Your support makes such a difference to my students!
