My school is located just west of downtown Chicago, in a close-knit Latino community. A community in which 93% of the people rank below the poverty level and live from paycheck to paycheck. In addition, 94% of my students receive free or reduced lunches. These children face unique obstacles. Their parents often have little education, a limited understanding of the English language, and very few marketable skills that will allow them to compete in a struggling job market.
