My students range in ages 11-21 and attend a special education school in one of the busiest areas of New York City. Most of my students come from low-income households, foster homes, or are raised by grandparents. They surprise me everyday as I learn about their personalities through non verbal forms of communication.
My students have autism, emotional, intellectual, and physical disabilities. Most of my students are non-verbal and use various forms of communication such as pictures, voice output devices, and/or gestures (i.e., pointing). With the proper visual supports and tools, they are able to express wants and needs, likes/dislikes, and better understand new information.
