This year, my school district has switched to thematic units. With themes like Cultural Differences and Oppression and Discrimination, my students will have the chance to dive into the stories of others who have similar experiences to their own.
As Lee Unkrich, the director of Coco, pointed out, I'm trying to "take a step forward toward a world where all children can grow up seeing characters in [books] that look and talk and live like they do." All of these novels present diverse characters that my students can find themselves in. My struggling readers would greatly benefit from engaging texts, like All American Boys, which won the 2016 Coretta Scott King Award for nonviolent social change. The other titles listed will be used in our literature circles, which encourages collaboration and fosters leadership skills.
High stakes testing has limited my students' reading history to passages that could appear on the STAAR test. The majority of them have not read a novel since elementary school. This list of novels has the potential to inspire students to fight for what they believe in, while opening their eyes to the joy of reading.
