Reading novels is an essential way to strengthen vocabulary, improve comprehension, and to see other world viewpoints. Of Mice and Men looks at mental illness and the theme of brotherhood. Rite of Passage looks at coming of age and wise decision making. These novels will benefit my students so they can read about different experiences and cultures so that they can critically respond and understand the world around them. Students will also gain the skills of annotating for different aspects such as figurative language and syntax and interacting with the novel by questioning character motives and other areas of the plot.
