Low self esteem and poor motivation are common adjectives used to describe my counseling students. My students are bright, creative, and have enough energy for all of us. Unfortunately, the low socioeconomic status of 75% of them limits their view of available opportunities. They have yet to find that thing that inspires them to do and be their absolute best; academically and physically.
Our school has a motto, "Whatever It Takes," to see student achievement in all areas. Our staff and community work daily to encourage and teach our students but they need something extra. That extra something has proven to be our after school running club. Participation in this club has been overwhelming. And the benefits include new friendships, increased attachment to school, better focus and stamina in the classroom and on the track, and improved behavior. Physically fit students are healthier and happier.
