Because my students come from various backgrounds, they have many different learning styles and levels. I work with a bilingual partner teacher who pushes in to help the bilingual students build a strong foundation for English literacy. For this reason we often work in small groups and split the classroom in two in order to teach both groups simultaneously. To make this work, we need separate spaces for each of our groups to meet for mini-lessons.
Each group needs a comfortable space to have meaningful conversations so they can fully understand and engage in each lesson. The carpet areas are also where groups can hold discussions, interact in a read-aloud, read with a partner, and work on group or independent work. I want my students to be able to have as much freedom around the room as possible so that they can build independent functioning skills and be able to monitor what works best for them. Providing 2 carpet areas is a step in achieving that goal.
