Big Books engage firsts graders with their large format, oversized pictures and print. We utilize the big books in shared reading activities as a whole class, then the books move to the Big Book Center.
At the Big Book Center, eager first graders partner up and use pointers to practice critical skills like rhyming, fluency and word-solving. Students find it very motivating to use these materials as both teachers and learners. They assist one another, and use what we've practiced in whole group to improve their own reading.
As first graders place the Big Book on the easel at the Big Book Center, they become immersed in the story and pictures. Reading to another student, or together with one voice, partner reading has never been so fun!
