My 4th graders attend a Title One school located in the South Bronx in which 30% live in shelters. Their goal is to read at their grade level by the end of the school year. Many struggle in the area of reading and don't have the resources to fully support and grow their reading muscle at home. For example, they do not have books to read at home. Therefore, they are in need of a variety of books to borrow within the classroom. Despite the obstacles they face on a daily basis they are always eager to learn and never give up hope. As their teacher I buy books of their interests out of my own pocket because I want to provide them with the opportunities to read with their peers and most importantly instill the joy that reading can bring regardless of the challenges within your own life.
