"I can! I will! I must!" That's what you'll hear when you walk into my school every morning. As the students gather in the auditorium, they chant our school motto, as a means of inspiration for just that one day. As a third grade teacher in an inclusion classroom, I am preparing my students for their first NJASK experience, but we face that challenge that many cannot read. But, that's "normal" for where they come from, unfortunately. Their little faces shine bright with excitement when they walk into the classroom, because for some this is the only stability they face in their lives. For some, coming to school is the only opportunity they'll get to look up to an adult. And for others, it's a scapegoat from reality for a couple of hours.
