I teach third grade in the Metro-Detroit area. I am fortunate to have students who are motivated about setting goals for themselves and who work hard at achieving those goals. The challenge that we often have, however, is a lack of materials that support literacy development as students learn how spelling patterns can support both reading work and writing work.
My class consists of students from very diverse cultural backgrounds. About 44% of the students in our school are low income and about 1/3 are from bilingual backgrounds.
