As a seventh-grade science teacher, I see every type of child! A mere twenty-five percent of my school identifies as Caucasian, nearly half speak a language other than English at home, more than three quarters are enrolled in the free/reduced meal program, and nearly a third live in a single-parent household.
Considering the diversity of the students themselves, it is imperative that my classroom utilizes a wide-ranging set of strategies and techniques. On any given day, my students are collaborating with whiteboards, engaging in a hands-on investigation, using technology to explore a new concepts, or playing skills-embedded games. Allowing access to science material using different modalities ensures that each student has the opportunity to master the content in a way that is comfortable for him or her.
