My kindergarteners live in West Humboldt Park - a low-income neighborhood in Chicago. About 60% of my students identify as African-American and 40% identify as Hispanic. Violence and crime are part of their everyday existence. Despite a significant lack of resources, we work hard every day to set a strong foundation of learning so we will not be behind peers growing up in other, wealthier, neighborhoods. Our school is believes in the success of each student and represents hope and investment in this community that desperately needs both.
