Rekenreks are a math tool that aid in the development of a strong number sense foundation. Rekenrek is a visual model that aids in the discovery of number relationships and also helps develop a variety of strategies in understanding addition and subtraction. My students would benefit from these materials as we transition from number recognition and number sense to subitizing, decomposing, joining, and many other abstract math concepts. I am asking for a class set so each student could use the hands-on materials to discover and extend their own learning. Each student having their own manipulative would also ensure engagement from all students. The set also comes with a larger teacher model so students can set their own Rekenrek, see how the teacher solved the problem, and then explain to the class how they got their own answer! I am also requesting a Rekenrek teacher workbook, as well as a Rekenrek domino game to further extend learning in an independent center.
When students are in charge of their own learning, anything can happen! When students are learning hard, abstract concepts like addition and subtraction, it can be incredibly overwhelming. I know with the use of Rekenreks in the classroom, all students will be able to develop a strong number foundation, and they will have the confidence to use numbers in ways they may not have thought possible before.
