I teach Biology in an urban public school in Massachusetts. A typical classroom has 30+ students representing as many as 13 ethnicities and a full range of ability levels. All of my students are capable of succeeding in science if provided the opportunities and support they deserve. Unfortunately, those opportunities and supports are often lacking.
Each year many of my incoming students expect that the school day will consist of a series of worksheets and lectures. I strive on a daily basis to provide my students with authentic experiences in which they, as student scientists, make observations and discoveries directly. It's working, but I need a little help!
