Flexible seating is a choice provided to students that allows them to work around the room comfortably and focused. Flexible seating provides students the learning environment they need to be their best. Students do their best work when they are comfortable; therefore these seating arrangements look wildly different from student to student.
The more choices students have, the more they will feel invested and responsible for their learning. Do you ever have to sit at a desk all day and catch yourself constantly rocking back and forth or fidgeting? When students are allowed to pick their learning environment, they are more engaged, more excited, and have a higher desire to learn. When learning is exciting, student effort increases and therefore a greater knowledge is gained.
With flexible seating, students are able to choose how they are sitting to get the most benefits out of their learning environment. Wobble stools and exercise balls will provide just the right amount of movement to keep blood flow stimulated and quiets the need for fidgety students to move. Balance disk will give students who need sensory objects near them to calm down the opportunity to be at arms length from relaxation. Bean bags and soft seats (pillows) will allow students who prefer to learn on the floor an area of comfort instead of hard tile. Bouncy bands will be used on desk to allow students who constantly need to move their legs the option to do so quietly. Last but not least, the plastic stools will be used in our small group area so students can collaborate with each other in comfort.
