One of the reasons my students sign up to take Spanish for Natives Speakers is to connect with their heritage. In addition, research has shown that when students are able to receive instruction in their native/heritage language it increases their academic achievement in all subject areas--including English. Even though my students speak Spanish at home, in the vast majority of the cases, they do not have access to reading material in Spanish produced by Spanish speaking authors.
By funding this project, you are helping my students have access to interesting, contemporary Latino literature. With being able to read in Spanish, my students will receive the vital input that will help improve their understanding of formal Spanish.
As a country, we often say we embrace diversity. Unfortunately, there are times where my students feel as though that is not the case. I'm asking you to consider funding my project so that I can get these Spanish novels into the hands of my students, which will increase their chances of success.
