Books in multiple languages will increasing visibility of linguistic diversity and international mindedness. Last year we began a section of our library for bilingual literature. We would like for our books available in the library to reflect our student population, and we currently have Spanish, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Arabic, and Russian speakers. All these languages are not reflected in these texts yet, but this is a start. Furthermore, adding Spanish literature would support our Spanish as an additional language program and students’ Spanish language instruction. We are an international school, and it's time for this identity to be more visible throughout our school. These books tie directly to the IB profiles, which teach character traits to be principled, open-minded, caring, balanced, communicators, knowledgeable, inquirers, risk-takers, and thinkers. Connecting back to these profiles will help teachers to use these texts in their classroom instruction. While I am requesting these books in other languages, we will make sure to have an English version of each available, so that both languages will be accessible.
