Studies have shown that flexible seating options that allow students to move and expend energy helps to increase student attention span and as a result, increase learning! Win -Win! Students need to wiggle while they work! They have a TON of energy and constantly need to move. Putting them in a classroom and expecting them to sit like a statue for 7 hours just isn't realistic. Too many students just zone out, or become behavior problems.
To remedy this issue, this school year, I jumped on the Flexible seating crazy train. I took MY OWN money and bought a few stability balls and crates, and took an old worn out bean bag off of a friend's hands. After making expectations and rules very clear to my students, I allowed them to take turns using these seating options.
Results: Number one, they were SUPER EXCITED to get to sit in this unusual seating. Number two, they looked forward to learning activities, and they became super focused when sitting in the seats. They would say things like, "this is so fun", when all they were doing was a grammar page.
Goal: My goal is to continue building the flexible seating in my classroom by adding stability ball chairs, a reading nook chair/shelf, wobble stools, and Big Joe's so that each student has an option of where they sit each day that helps encourage them to learn their best!!!!
