Many students read because they have to, but I'm working so that my students read because they LOVE to. My fabulous fourth graders attend a Title I school in North Carolina that serves the needs of predominantly at-risk African American and Latino American students. Unfortunately, many of my students lack the desire to pick up a good book and simply read for the enjoyment of reading. Deep down, I know my students are eager to learn how to read and learn to have a love of reading, yet many of my students have limited access to books such as those in this project.
My students come from various cultures with a variety of interests, experiences, and questions that they would love answered. With the books from this project, we can begin to peak interests, build on experiences, and answer some questions. For this reason, I NEED your help to launch the reading lives of my nine year old students.
