Our middle schoolers are allowed to choose an elective per quarter. Over the course of 3 quarters my class will read all 7 books, do a comparison to the 8 movies and do an in depth character study of Harry, Ron and Hermione.
Students will be learning critical thinking skills working together to chart the growth of the 3 characters across the 7 books. Especially since the books start at the ages these students are, showing how tough decisions shape a person's future. Also exploring that although the 3 unlikely friends come from vastly different backgrounds, they are able to come together and inspire others to join them on their quest. Sociologists have noted that children that have read the Harry Potter series are more accepting of diversity and understanding of differences.
