I will implement a listening station with yoga mats and a yoga chair that students will use when feeling emotional. They will listen and learn relaxation strategies and techniques, and calming story telling, to refocus their minds.
Many of my urban students come with major trauma and do not know how to positively express their seven and eight year old emotions. Many will come in angry, explosive, combative, sullen, withdrawn, unable to sit still and focus on the learning going on. The tent, carpet and sensory items will be used as quiet, safe and calming areas.
These items will be used to support these children to learn strategies and positive ways to handle their emotions. These two areas will give them a safe environment to implement the strategies they learn.
