My ESL students work hard everyday and have made so much progress this year. Some of my students have improved by 7 reading levels just this year! I want to encourage them to keep practicing this summer. They all are from high poverty homes where parents cannot use the public library due to lack of personal or public transportation.
Each day, they spend 30 minutes reading independently. They get to choose what they read. About half of my students need to read leveled books that are available through teacher stores because regular library books are too difficult. Others have graduated to easy books like Magic Treehouse or Nate the Great. Some gravitate toward nonfiction while others like fiction. Our school is 40% free and reduced meals with one third ESL (mostly Hispanic), one third African-American and one third White.
