Big Books are essential companions for kindergarteners. The large format with legible text and brightly colored pictures quickly engage students. Big Books are used daily during shared reading and literacy workstations. Students eagerly read and reread the text using pointers to track print and develop concepts of word. They have fun reading!
A Big Book Center provides an inviting location to read, explore, and safely store big books. Currently, our big books are stacked on shelves. It is cumbersome to lift books to find the one you want to use. They have become dog-eared and bent from being stacked and faded from the light. Students have difficulty returning them when cleaning up. The Big Book Center has easily accessible storage in the back for students to select books to read. Vertical slots allow books to be grouped by content and genre. The easel on top of the unit prevents books from being stepped on and torn when reading on the floor.
As a bonus, students will be able to use the dry-erase magnetic board to develop phonics and vocabulary skills. Please help my students become avid readers!
