Our students benefit from two leveled rotations per day. In the morning, they rotate to different teachers for Designated English Language Development, during which time they improve their language skills through targeted vocabulary practice and literature. In the afternoons, they rotate to Core Support where they strengthen their skills as writers and readers.
Rotating between classrooms gives our students the opportunity to learn with students at their level, but it also leads to small amounts of time throughout the day being lost as they transition. During these rotations, the students coming into my classroom do not have any desk space to store their supplies, so they are kept in crates on my counter. With these storage drawers at each table group, my English Language Development students and my Core Support students will have all of their materials readily available the moment they sit down. My homeroom students will also be able to use the drawers to store extra supplies, which will encourage sharing among group members!
The top drawer of each unit will be used for my ELD students to store their notebooks, texts and pencils. The next drawer of each unit will be for my Core Support students, who take a lot of notes on thinking maps and need those to be readily available when they are writing. The other drawers will be used for my homeroom students to store whiteboards, markers, extra pencils and erasers, art supplies and binder paper. Currently, they keep all of these supplies in their overpacked desks! I am really looking forward to these storage units making it easier for my students to get their supplies when they need them. They can spend more time focusing on reading and writing than on accessing materials.
