My Superstars are 3 to 5-year olds with intensive needs, each diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. In order for these children to learn, their bodies and senses must become regulated, and since my students haven't learned how to do that yet, we use a variety of sensory materials.
By having a full sensory library, we will be able to address our students' individual needs. Having options, students are able to experiment and learn ways to shut out all the extraneous stimulation taking them off task. Whether they prefer weighted or compression therapy vests, fidget toys or vibration, my superstars deserve the same resources that other programs offer their students.
Once the children feel calm and focused, they can access the lessons I teach, attend to the social / emotional skills we model, and gain confidence in their abilities. I always want them to love school, no matter their age, so learning self-regulation in pre-k will set them up for a lifetime of learning.
