I teach a diverse group of students with special needs in a large urban district.
Standards for academic readiness seem to increase each year for young children transitioning to Kindergarten. Along with these academic expectations come high expectations for children to self-regulate behaviors in the classroom. My students struggle in this area of self-regulation. They seem unaware of their personal space and that of others. They are highly sensitive to their environments, often unable to process and integrate what they are experiencing on a sensory level. This comes in the form of sensitivities to touch, sound, taste, smell, as well as too much visual stimulation. Students that have difficulty processing the stimulation in their environments might shut down, tune out, act out or become completely disorganized.
