The students in my inner city, elementary, inclusion school are amazing, resourceful, and oftentimes times challenging! Many of my students display much potential. They strive to make the right choices. However, traumas and social stressors are frequent barriers to learning. Aside from having been exposed to adverse childhood experiences, many of my children also present with learning disabilities, autism, intellectual impairments, and/or physical disabilities. Distractions, outbursts, aggression, tantrums and/or withdrawal are frequently observed behavioral responses to pressures and expectations. Many students strive to make the right choices, but due to their weakened self-regulation skills, they are not always successful. Their ability to form relationships and to achieve academically, are greatly hindered. Many children are seeking attention, whether positive or negative. As a school, we want to strengthen their ability to recognize their needs using positive approaches.
