The research and literature is out there; kids are not reading anymore. I believe part of the reason is that students are not given opportunities to read books that interest them. In addition, most of these books don't reflect their lives nor is their any self-affirmation in what they are being asked to read.
As a new teacher, I want to fill my room with books that serve as "Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors," as Rudine Sims Bishop once put it.
Books as mirrors allow students to see themselves in the books they read. Bishop has said that "...in that reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of the larger human experience."
Through this project, I hope to give my students these opportunities. Students will be expected to read independently with books of their choice. Regular goal setting, reflection, and quick conferences will be the norm with the books they read. Through this year long effort, lifelong readers will emerge.
