My school is in a lower socio-economic area of Los Angeles. My students primarily come from Latin American countries or are children of immigrants who are not fluent in English. Many of my students don't have books at home to read or have not been exposed to the importance of literacy, and do not understand the importance of reading daily. Many of the parents in our community not only lack the language skills to help their children, but come from areas where education was not valued. They cannot read in their native language, let alone English. My students need a place in their classroom where they can set aside books that interest them in and keep them thirsty to continue reading in order to enhance their literacy skills.
