These books will allow the students to participate in a book club in the classroom and engage in reading in their native language, Spanish. These 24 students are in a Heritage Spanish class where they will be reading novels in Spanish and participating in discussions and writing about the books that they read. We want the students to love reading in any language!
With these new books, students will be expanding their literacy skills and facilitating discussions in class. Students will be reading independently or in small groups while coming up with discussions questions. After reading, they will engage in conversation about the book by sharing their thoughts and ideas and responding to each other's comments. Students will be developing their oral language skills in Spanish through academic conversations. Students will gain insight into various cultures due to the books we have selected.
Having these 8 novels in the classroom will allow us to have multiple book clubs going on at the same time and throughout the year. The novels will provide choice as to what books students want to read. The levels of the books vary for the different reading levels in the class. There are books from different genres to pique students' interests. These books are going to make such a difference in how Heritage Spanish is structured and how students are engaged in learning.
