Every year, the Missouri Association of School Librarians provides a list of the Gateway Award Nominees. According to their website, "Guidelines for Choosing Books *Books should interest teenagers in grades nine through twelve. *Books should be written by an author living in the United States. *Books should be of literary value which may enrich teenagers' personal lives. *Books should be published two years prior to nomination on a Master List of 15 nominees. (Currently 2014.) *Some consideration should be given to genre diversity, gender representation, range of reading level (avoiding elementary levels), racial diversity, and social, political, economic, and religious viewpoints. *Books should be appropriate for teenagers." This project will get the Gateway Award Nominees into the hands of our high school students for their independent reading projects. Reading has so many benefits and providing books that are thought-provoking and interesting to our high school students is very important. Not only are they improving their reading skills, fluency, and vocabulary, but reading allows them to build connections to the world around them. It allows them to experience a world far away, develop empathy for others, and so much more!
