The students I teach attend a Title 1 school in Texas. These students are economically disadvantaged, most coming from one-parent homes with many siblings. Over 80% of our students qualify for the free and reduced lunch program due to low family income levels and a high population of students are labeled "at-risk" due to retention in previous grade levels, family trauma, foster care, etc. Many of our students also are living in government housing, have difficulty providing school supplies and proper clothing for the school year.
Despite the economic position of our students, many are very optimistic and excited about education and enjoy finding security in the school atmosphere.
