All classrooms need and deserve to have their own classroom library, and creating one is no easy feat. It's expensive and time-consuming, but critically important. As I take over a first grade classroom from fourth grade, I need to provide my students with leveled texts that are high-interest and promote a love of reading. I can't do this with the books I currently own, as most are beyond the level of my firsties. That's where you come in!
First grade is a year of unprecedented growth in children's ability to read and develop their identities as readers, but I simply won't be able to give my students the literacy instruction they need without a first grade-specific classroom library. Such a library needs both fiction and nonfiction texts, per Common Core standards, and needs books kids will actually want to read. The set of 242 books I'm hoping to receive through this project include both genres, as well as favorites like "Goodnight, Moon" and the Elephant & Piggie series. Books will be organized by genre and level so students can easily and independently access texts that are "just right" for them. Thanks so much for considering my project!
