I teach at a public high school in Colorado. I teach kids in grades 9-12 and from all walks of life. We have a lot of economic diversity in my school, around 10% of our students are well off financially and the rest are lower middle class - below the poverty line. We have a large migrant population and we have too large a number of homeless kids. I estimate around 75% of the kids I encounter will never have the opportunity to see great works of art in the great museums of the world. This is one of the biggest reasons that I'm passionate about building an art library; for some of them, this will be their only revelation to the world of art. I want it to be outstanding.
My kids are great. They work hard, many seek time outside of class time to work on projects, several are part of art club and others come in with the advocacy of student mentors to get help. As a school we are trying to focus on improving our students' literacy. This is one of many ways I can help.
