Imagine sitting in a classroom and being asked to connect to characters in a book who don't look like you. Consider what it must be like to analyze a character whose lived experiences do not at all reflect your reality. Consequently, you disengage from reading and learning all together. My goal through this project is to provide my students with books whose characters, settings, and plot are relevant to them. Imagine the sheer joy of a student who is able to pick up a book and be so engaged, that doors they once believed to be shut, are opened to them.
