I teach middle level science to one hundred 7th graders every day. The majority of students I teach come from low income homes and a variety of ethnic backgrounds. There are many languages spoken by my students, such as Spanish, Russian, Arabic, and Pashto.
My teammates and I work extremely hard to design a science curriculum that is both meaningful and engaging for our students. Our units are fully aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards, and follow NGSS best practices. Each of our units is phenomenon-based, and incorporates a variety of hands on learning experiences, including scientific inquiry and engineering design. Without science classrooms, and with little to no budget for purchasing materials, incorporating authentic learning opportunities can be difficult to manage. That said, we are a highly motivated team of teachers who find creative ways of bringing science into the classroom.
