In my district, we have half-day K (one group comes in the morning and another during the afternoon). In the morning, I teach regular half-day K and, in the afternoon, 15 K students identified as needing additional help are asked to stay for the rest of the day with me for extra learning experiences (Extended Day K). Many of my students are experiencing the school environment for the first time. Some have never held a pencil or crayon. We also have a large population of English Language Learners who need more pictures for understanding. Either way, my students are constantly learning how to recognize and form the letters and numbers.
Throughout the year, my students develop their letter and sound knowledge and then use it to write their own stories and books by the end of the year!
