My class consists of students with various mild/moderate disabilities in grades 3rd through 5th. I work with children that have learning disabilities, cerebral palsy, ADD, ADHD, autism, intellectual disabilities, and major behavior problems. Most of my students are visual, and kinesthetic learners that love to be engaged by realistic and colorful pictures. We are also a Title I school with diverse ethnic and economic underprivileged students who lack exposure to real life experiences. Many of them have never had the opportunity to be exposed to visiting a zoo or even going to the beach due to their health conditions and economic status. As a result they lack language and vocabulary exposure. In addition our school recently began adopting the Common Core State Standards in order to help our students build knowledge in the areas of reading, language and math through the use of content-rich nonfiction books. It is crucial that my students get rich-visuals and explicit instruction to best meet their needs.
