This is the first of five interdisciplinary units I will present in my classroom next school year. Students will read about poetry and poets through close reading and writing to learn. They will begin by reading the novel, Love That Dog by Sharon Creech, which is a free-verse book written in diary format from the perspective of young boy who resists his teacher's poetry assignments.
After completing the novel, students will consider which of the poems they read inspired them the most and will select a poet to study more deeply. They will then create their own poem in the likeness of the poet as well as a biographical essay about their poet. We will also be working with an artist from Right Brain Initiative to create a collage depicting the mood of our poem.
The unit will end with a Poet's Performance! Students will read their poet's poem, their poem, and their essay. This will encourage students to pay attention to phrasing, punctuation and expression while reading aloud. We will set up out Language Arts binders during this unit and they will be used throughout the school year.
