Block printing can be traced back to 2nd C. East Asia, where artisans would carve into blocks of wood, apply ink, and print them on silk. A few hundred years later, blocks were engraved to transcribe religious works, calendars, and texts. Fast forward to the 17th century, and 鈥淯kioy-e鈥 artists boldly communicated the beliefs and interests of the Japanese people and unwittingly inspired the Impressionist painters of 19th C. Western Europe.
Etching into linoleum blocks is the type of project that motivates students to be bold, take risks, persevere through challenges, and propel their introspective pursuits. For example, the immediacy and intimacy of the carving process, expressiveness of the line, control of positive and negative space, and uniqueness of the final product would delight my students to their cores. I鈥檇 be deeply grateful for any help in giving them the opportunity to experiment with this historic medium.
Thank you for your consideration.
