We spend the majority of our day gathering together on our classroom rug to share our thinking, listen to read alouds, participate in mini lessons, and much more. We start each day with a Morning Meeting circled around our classroom rug, where each student is able to greet each other and start off our day. This is only the beginning of our time together on the rug. Students gather on the rug at the start of each subject for a mini lesson, during this time the are able to sit comfortably to listen and share their thinking with their classmates.
Our classroom rug is more than a cozy place for my students to sit, it is the center for our learning. A rug can add comfort to a classroom and help students feel like they are in their "second home" at school. Many students love to curl up and read on the rug and some even choose to work sprawled on the soft rug instead of at their desk. A classroom rug helps give students the choice to be the most comfortable and focused while they are learning.
